The Do’s & Don’ts of Baby Registries

As a new parent, you’re going to need a lot of supplies to give your baby a happy and comfortable life! After the excitement of the pregnancy news dies down, the thoughts of the parents-to-be turn to what to put on the registry for the baby shower. Some parents can’t wait to get started on this list, while others are sent into a panic simply thinking about the idea of choosing the right crib. Discover some of the best tips and tricks for creating a baby registry.

DO register online and in-store. It makes sense to register online for certain things you know you’re going to need, like burp cloths and diapers. Other more big-ticket items, like strollers and cribs, should be registered for in-store. You’ll want to see and feel what these items look like and examine how they work before you commit to a certain make or brand.

DON’T forget to think about your long-term needs. Babies grow up quickly, so it’s important to remember this when you’re creating your registry. Consider things like seasonal items, daycare days, and bath toys, and add them to your registry. Similarly, don’t forget to register for clothing and diapers in various sizes.

DO create a registry that contains gifts at all price points. Everyone is working within a different budget and may only be able to afford to spend a certain amount. When you register, keep this in mind. Your family and friends will appreciate it!  

DON’T register for gender-specific colors. When you’re creating your registry, opt for neutral tones when it comes to furniture, accessories, and even toys. Whether you’re finding out the sex of the baby or not, having these non-gender-specific things will be beneficial down the line, especially if you’re planning to have more kids.

DO get creative with your registry. Think of things outside of the basic onesies and diapers, like bedroom artwork, nursing supplies, books, music, and movies. You can also add a few things to your registry for yourself or your significant other. The registry isn’t really about you, but if you find a super-comfortable rocking chair to register for, no one’s going to judge you!  

DON’T register for a breast pump. The Affordable Care Act has made it possible for mothers to apply for a high-end breast pump, free of charge. Instead of registering for one, call your insurance company to see if you’re covered.

DO write thank you cards for the gifts you receive. A handwritten note will help to show your appreciation for the gift you and your baby received. Make sure it is written in a timely fashion, within a month of the baby shower.

DON’T feel pressured! Even if your registry doesn’t include everything you know you’re going to need when the baby arrives, it’s all going to work out. If you notice that you forgot to register for a few items, you’ll have plenty time to fill in the gaps once the baby is born.
